Always Stay Humble and Kind
Tim McGraw is a pop culture icon within the genre of country music. While he has
written a numerous amount of songs he also has become a famous icon in the film making
industry. He has made his mark in pop culture through several accomplishments. He represents the country music world with a hit song and a memorable performance and including a speech after being awarded country song of the year at the 2016 Country Music Awards but aside from country music he also represents the film industry by starring in a best-selling drama film. These accomplishments give Tim McGraw credibility to his persona for not only his fans but for the rest of the world to see. Being one of the world’s most famous country artists is what places Tim McGraw into the genre of country music. He has composed and recorded many songs, but one of his most recent hits is the song, “Humble and Kind.” This song became a best-seller when his album Damn Country Music was released in the year of 2015 (Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw Songfacts).Tim McGraw was interviewed with Taste of Country to explain why he composed this song “Humble and Kind.” (https://youtu.be/Cie5p-Arf8o). In his interview, he stated that his purpose of recording this song was to give advice to his children, specifically his daughter Gracie as she started her journey off to college (Tim McGraw Fought Off Tears to Record 'Humble and Kind').

This event is an explicit example of pathos. His emotions were triggered which then gave him the extra push he was looking for to go ahead and start recording. He also explained that “Humble and Kind” was recorded for all his fans and country music lovers, but more directly, the audience he gained from this song were parents with children growing up and teenagers/ young adults starting to begin their new journeys into adult hood (Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw Songfacts). This song was made to mean something and give advice to his listeners. As the song became a top hit Tim McGraw’s audience expanded as more and more people started to hear “Humble and Kind.” When songs are put on the top charts list of iTunes they often gain a broader audience while also earning a spot on the radio to play for months (Tim McGraw on "Humble and Kind"). The top hit song “Humble and Kind” utilizes the mode of audio by being communicated through lyrics and song. Tim McGraw evokes pathos all throughout “Humble and Kind” by using vivid language in his lyrics and getting the audience to tap into their emotions when singing along. The song is simple and easy to understand so people know what type of message the song is trying to portray to its audience. For example, the opening line to the first verse is “You know there’s a light that glows by the front door, don’t forget the key under the mat” sets the tone right off the bat for what this song is going to mean. This set of lyrics can be interpreted to mean people always have a place to come home to if they are humble and kind. The use of different instruments and melodies throughout certain parts of the song also is helpful with setting a tone and giving people different emotions throughout the song. “Humble and Kind” starts out slow and steady with a melody but picks up a guitar when McGraw starts to sing in the opening verse. Once McGraw gets to the chorus the song brightens up more with new background music and a somewhat faster melody but as soon as he transitions back into the verses of the song it changes right back to the slow and steady melody. The music picks up at the chorus so that people know what McGraw’s message truly is and throughout the verses the music is slow and steady so that people can hear and interpret the advice he is giving.

Not only does Tim McGraw compose and record songs he also stars in movies. One of his accomplishments as an actor is starring in the best-selling film The Blind Side. This movie is based on the book and is an American biographical sports drama film that was released in 2009 (The Blind Side (Film)). Tim McGraw plays a huge role in this movie as he stars as the dad of the film. The movie The Blind Side earned numerous awards and nominations throughout the years of 2009 (The Blind Side (Film)).
The audience this movie targeted were people of all ages, but more directly, people who have a taste for sports and enjoy to watch drama films. The Blind Side evokes pathos by pulling people in with the films inspiring message and by wanting the audience to show emotion towards the powerful film. The movie is delivered through the medium of digital while the mode is shown through audio, visual, and video. An important aspect in the movie that is also helpful towards the audience is the song choices incorporated within certain scenes.
This helps the audience to create opinions and make connections to the movie. In the movie, The Blind Side there is a famous scene where McGraw’s character helps Michael Orr figure out what to write his poem on for English class. The poem he writes about is based on “Charge of the Light Brigade.” (https://www.teachertube.com/video/blind-side-charge-of-the-light-brigade-scen-224933). In this scene, McGraw and Orr really start to bond while incorporating school work with sports. The purpose of this movie was to deliver a message to the audience and show that the love and desire from one person to help another can potentially change the lives of both people.
While Tim McGraw has earned various awards throughout his career one of his more recent accomplishments is his song “Humble and Kind” winning country song of the year at the 2016 Country Music Awards. Tim McGraw gave a memorable and heartwarming performance to the audience at the Country Music Awards. He truly reeled the audience in and touched everyone’s heart with this live performance. Towards the end of the song McGraw knelt to his knees while a group kids joined him on stage with candles to finish it off. At this moment, Tim McGraw’s performance became even more stunning. Afterwards, Tim and his lifetime friend Lori McKenna took the stage to accept the award and give their speeches. “Humble and Kind” was originally written by Lori McKenna for her husband and five children (Humble and Kind Wins Song of the Year at the 2016 CMA Awards). Lori sent McGraw the song and he went on to record it a couple years later. Lori McKenna stated “’Humble and Kind’ comments on a trouble season, it’s a challenge to everybody who hears it, no matter which side of the issue they might find them on, to live up to our best selves” (Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw Songfacts). McGraw stated that it was song that needed to be heard. “When you find a song that says something but also means something to you, those are always special” (Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw Songfacts).
Winning country song of the year is a tremendous accomplishment in
the country music world. Tim McGraw pulled it off with this famous song and his emotional attachment to the song gave it so much more meaning.

Another aspect thatmakes the song “Humble and Kind” special is that it also brought Tim McGraw to create his own website (stayhumbleandkind.com). This website allows people to share their own random acts of kindness by using the hashtag #stayhumbleandkind and allowing people to help create a network of giving. The website is Tim McGraw’s way of promoting the purpose of his song and allowing others to join his movement. He has used social
media for advertising his website and as posted videos on his Facebook page challenging people to share their own acts of kindness.
(https://www.facebook.com/TimMcGraw/videos/10153957865898556/). Allowing the people to share their acts of kindness on his songs website shows just how
meaningful being humble and kind can be. A variety of different genres are all functioning in our everyday lives. Tim McGraw has shown to the world that he not only falls under the genre of country music but also has placed himself into the genre of drama films. With combining these genres Tim has created his own
style and a way of communicating to his audiences through a different variety of modes like: written, visual, audio, and video. All of McGraw’s accomplishments have satisfied his persona and have shaped him into the pop culture icon he is today.

Reflection
For this project, we were to understand the role of genres in pop culture and current events. It took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to write Project 1 on because I wanted to make my paper interesting. After a lot of thought, I chose to select the pop culture icon Tim McGraw to write my project on. I was listening to one of his songs "humble & kind" in the car and it sparked my interest to write about him. Finding three artifacts to represent Tim McGraw were easy to find, the only hard part was rhetorically analyzing each artifact in depth. My first draft was a bit of a mess and all over the place but I was thankful to have great group members who helped steer me into a better direction before I had to meet with my professor and discuss my paper. My big break definitely came after my conference with my professor though. I gained a better understanding on how to analyze each artifact in greater detail was able to finish my final paper strong. Another thing that really helped me put together my final paper was learning and discussing about rhetorical devices in class and the readings given inside our textbook!
